Makers for Change
There are 3000 young homeless veterans sleeping on the streets of NSW tonight. Homelessness is a result of many factors including mental illness such as post traumatic stress disorder leading to family breakdowns, addiction, depression and in the worst cases, suicide. 'Makers for Change' is making noise about the issue, helping to rehabilitate veterans and give them the opportunity to give back to those who have helped them get back on track. This is an interactive lighting installation to initiate 'Makers for Change' and to help the public physically understand the gruelling reality these veterans face on a day to day basis, trying to keep a lid on their emotions and slowly try to rebuild their lives. The user experiences the strain of winding the crank down, empathising with the struggle to keep control of emotions and fight triggers that may send the veterans out of control. After latching your crank into the base, you choose the moment to release the tension, letting the light freely float back to its original position, lighter and more engaged with its surroundings symbolically reflecting on the day when the young veterans can breathe with ease again, foreseeing a brighter future ahead.
